澳门这个名字源于妈祖，明嘉靖三十二年（1553年），葡萄牙人从当时明朝广东地方政府取得澳门居住权，成为首批进入中国的欧洲人。当时葡萄牙人从妈祖阁（妈阁庙）附近登陆，向问当地人这里的地名，因在妈阁庙旁，当地人便回答妈阁，于是澳门便被命名为Macau（妈阁葡萄牙语的译音），大陆多拼写为Macao。
